Finding love in an online world

Cyber psychologist Dr. Nicola Fox Hamilton on dating apps

Thank you so much to everyone who has subscribed to this Substack in the past few weeks, I am SO grateful. So far, all the podcasts have been before the paywall, but increasingly some will be for paid subscribers only, so if you did want to sign up for a paid subscription, I would be, obviously, eternally grateful!

My guest today is one of the most interesting people I think I’ve ever had had the good luck to speak to.

I first got to know Dr. Nicola Fox Hamilton, who is a researcher and lecturer in the area of cyberpsychology, when I was working on my second book, Courting, which is about dating in rural Ireland. Below is a screenshot of a snippet of one of the insights she gave me at the time.

She is absolutely fascinating on this topic, on how the apps have changed everything about how we meet a partner, how men and women behave differently on the apps, the gamification of online dating, disposability, the abundance of choice and loneliness, ghosting, hyper personalization, the new nature of a first date when you have never met the person, and the criteria by which we choose a partner online.

Thank you for listening, and thank you Nicola for your time.

How To Fall Apart
When Liadan Hynes’ marriage fell apart someone told her that things might never be ok again, this is a podcast that sets out to disprove that. A podcast about picking up pieces, where she talks to people about how they coped or didn’t cope when life went off the rails. About the things that helped them put it all back together. And about the fact that we are all dealing with the same things, so sharing is caring, as her four year old daughter tells her.
